Between 14th May and 20th May, 1916, 21st London of 142 Brigade, 47th Division, were in the front line at Souchez to the north of Arras. The Battalion Diary makes no mention of any casualties during this period in the trenches but does record that, “German artillery noticed to be increasing in volume and much more activity on part of Trench Mortars and snipers”. It is highly likely that one of these caused the death of Andrew Brown, who was killed in action on 15th May, 1916.
